Negotiations for the sale of The FRINGE THEORY have ceased. Unable to reconcile differences, stakeholders have agreed to a spring break. Resumption of negotiations depend on a number of variables that will be assessed at a place and time yet to be arranged.
In the interim, The FRINGE THEORY will be replaced by The NEW THEORY -- a startling proposal that attempts to explain the significance and true meaning of unintended consequences. A blogperson for The NEW THEORY will be announced shortly.

No Animals Were Harmed
Cores are largely known (acknowledged). Fringes are largely unknown (unacknowledged). When viewing a core, the viewer is part of the fringe. When viewing the fringe, the viewer is part of the core. A simple 180 degree shift in point of view is all that is needed to make the transition. A viewer who spins is a model of potential, simultaneously both core and fringe (no need to poison cats).

The Inevitable Is As Exhausting As The Impossible
The voice of Anonymous is strong tonight...he/she/it has added much to this stream of de-consciousness in the past hours. Thank you.
The entire day today was spent in a grueling negotiation over the fate of The Fringe Theory. Coffee was not provided. Two dozen well meaning men and women gathered in a very nice room to analyze the significance of TFT and to crassly set a price on it. After a free wheeling group discussion, we broke into three small groups, each group assigned one or two dimensions of TFT to analyze in depth. Each group reported back to the whole twice during the day to discuss progress. After the first report, one member of each group moved to another group in order to take their insights and understanding into a new discussion.
The experience was at once exhilarating as well as a demonstration of the truth of TFT. We began as a not quite random group of individuals drawn together by a need to discuss an idea. Put another way, we were bits of drifting matter pulled inexorably toward a magnetic core. We began as a fringe, orbiting an idea (core) . The core (idea) fed our discussion, pulling us in closer until we began to coalesce around themes inspired by the idea (core). In the end these themes and our entire group merged again to form a new core (idea), which was The Fringe Theory.
Sadly, we did not resolve the terms of sale of TFT. But for a brief moment we merged and burned with a self-sustaining energy that was enough.
Fringe is all that there is. Core is all that there is.
As of this moment, the Cubs are beating the Astros...

Oh, The Humanity!!
Imagine a well intentioned scientist, about a 100 trillion light years tall (images appear smaller than actual size). This scientist runs a particle accelerator and has focused his career on discovering what would be the smallest particle ever known.
One day he dips his molecular ice cream scoop into some radioactive rocky road, and scoops up just one of an infinite array of fascinating molecules. He deposits his selection in the accelerator, then launches it in a great circular pathway at an incomprehensible speed.
Now, in the same accelerator, but on an a track headed in the opposite direction, our scientist deposits a particularly hard nugget -- more or less the same size as the molecule of rocky road, but much harder and more massive. Both bits gain incredible speed and are finally nudged into a head-on collision. The nugget vaporizes the molecule and our scientist tracks the debris and does, indeed, discover the smallest, wee-ist bit of existence ever known.
This is a very smart scientist with very expensive equipment. Not only does he detect the smallest particle EVER, he has frozen it in the form of an image captured on an incredibly sensitive camera. The camera has, in fact, caught extraordinary detail and definition and the image is magnified again and again and again until the researcher sees this: (photo of smallest particle EVER).
Does it matter that the particle remains a mystery to the good scientist? Does it matter that the molecule our scientist studied was the Milky Way Galaxy and that this image is all that remains? Does it matter that he prematurely ended the final game of the 2011 championship? Does it matter?
Negotiations continue in the possible sale of The Fringe Theory.
More to come...

Breaking News
Dear Readers:
Although The Fringe Theory (TFT) has yet to show a profit, its unique value and extraordinary potential have been recognized by a source I am not at liberty to name. We are currently in negotiations to sell TFT for a substantial sum -- enough to allow me and a small nation to live comfortably for the rest of our collective lives (barring a shooting war).
While my legal staff, headed by Fay Fey, work on the details of this transaction, I will still make daily posts to this blog, but on non-TFT content (as part of the negotiated pre-negotiation contract).
This is an exciting time for the entire staff at TFT. Regardless of the outcome, it is reassuring to know that our work is appreciated.
To all our faithful readers, your thirst for more details on TFT will eventually be slaked (lovely word, "slaked" -- from the Old English meaning "slay" and "baked"; a term that referred to cooks who served in the Christian crusades).
Stay tuned...

Wrigley Field: The Life, Death, and Life of a Core
Imagine Wrigley Field at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. Empty. Silent. Except for the hollow night sounds that bounce off the brick, roll for a bit, then stop, there is nothing here; no life, no reason, no purpose.
As the night slips by, first one person, then another arrives. Lights flick on in interior offices and among concession stands. Dawn. Now small clusters of people show up. A few players arrive early to loosen up and practice. Eventually the gates open and early birds arrive to watch batting practice. Business at the ticket windows picks up. By 11:00 a.m. Wrigley Field has become a dynamic, pulsing core. Its presence on West Addison now exercises a strong and intensifying field of magnetic energy that dramatically bends and shapes traffic in a ten block radius. This magnetic pull can be felt much further out as well, in the northern and western suburbs and (we know this through careful comparison of game-day observations by Hubble and geocentric satellites) can be shown to affect activity even on the south side of town.
From 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and sometimes much later, Wrigley Field is a self-sustaining core around which it can be said much of Chicago and northeast Illinois orbits. Radio signals begin in the center of this core that travel a complex electronic route until they finally escape Wrigley to become detectable around the globe and in space (in a parallel process photons are created and find their way out of the labyrinthine core of our Sun, escaping the heliosphere to warm fans sitting in Wrigley bleachers).
Now think of an outlet mall the day after Thanksgiving; a high school on any weekday between September and June; Washington DC when Congress is in session (or even out of session for that matter); a star at the center of planets; a black hole at the center of a galaxy; a Big Bang at the center of time and existence. These are all cores around which a fringe orbits. In each instance the core and fringe are separate but mutually defining, mutually dependent, and stuck with one another by the firm but subtle rule of attraction.
What does a Sunday game between the Cubs and Phillies tell us about cosmology and physics (common and quantum)? I don't know, but I feel certain I'll come up with some sort of connection that I will attempt to make clear in Chapter 232.
It's sunny and warm today...at least part of the fringe basks in the cast offs of the Core.
